About Rum Cay

Rum Cay Bahamas Aerial Shot

Rum Cay is located about 360 miles SE of Fort Lauderdale in between San Salvador and Long Island and is the home of only 80 living souls.  Rum Cay is sort of a forgotten island!  It got its name when a barrel of rum washed up on shore and the locals decided to change it from Santa Maria de la Conception to Rum Cay.  It’s still debatable if Christopher Columbus first landed in San Salvador or Rum Cay first.  Rum Cay history dates back to the Arawak Indians as there are still traces of Indian art in the caves of Rum. There are lots to be discovered on this island as this could have been where the Pirates of the Caribbean movies originated from!  The modern day pirates still roam so be sure to come armed with a sword!  Arrghh!  The HMS Conqueror sunk off the reefs of Sumner Point in 1861 and still lies there in 30 feet of water.

You never know what you will find here as the Rum Cay beaches are completely bare for miles as treasures are continuously washing up and off shore.  Will you be there to find the next keg of Rum?

A little bit of Rum Cay History

Thank you to Wikipedia for the following: First known as Mamana by the Lucayan Indians, the cay was later renamed Santa María de la Concepción by Columbus. Spanish explorers once found a lone rum keg washed up on shore and changed the name again to Rum Cay (pop: 53 1990 census). In the north there is a cave containing Lucayan drawings and carvings. Various artifacts from the Arawak period have been found by farmers in the fertile soil, which the Indians enriched with bat guano. In common with other islands, Rum Cay has gone through a series of industry specific economic peaks. Pineapple, salt and sisal have all been important industries, but competition and natural disasters, such as the 1926 hurricane, have all taken their toll and today tourism is the main source of employment. Plantation boundaries known as ‘margins’ can be seen all over the island, which date from the beginning of the 19th century when Loyalists settled here. Nearly everybody lives in Port Nelson where cottages can be rented. Settlements such as Port Boyd, Black Rock and Gin Hill are now deserted and overgrown.

The wreck of the 101-gun man of war HMS conqueror, built in Devon in 1855 and which served in the Crimean War, lies in 30 feet of water off Rum Cay where it sank in 1861. It is the property of The Bahamas Government and none of the contents of the ship may be removed. She was lost on Sumner Point Reef, Rum Cay, on December 13, 1861. All 1,400 aboard survived.

Rum Cay Sharks

Shark Show at the Marina

For those who love sharks then you can't miss the shark show at Sumner Point Marina at dusk. Once the sportfish boats come in from fishing each day the sharks come in for dinner. As the guys are cleaning the fish and throwing the carcasses into the marina bay the sharks have a great feeding. Usually one of the guys will add to the excitement by tying a rope onto a fish carcass and go shark fishing....as seen on left. Yes....there is testosterone involved but very exciting!
